Breaking and Schooling

Georgina Lomas has grown up with horses and has been a breaking, retraining, schooling and competeing horses all her life.  Alongside her step dad Peter Thompson and mother Christine Lomas who both have a lifetime of knowledge of horses, and are both BSPS judges.

She has dealt with a range of horses with varying temperaments, problem horses, breaking young and older horses, retraining racehorses, training for sale or show, personal horse training lessons and training partnerships for competition.

All horses at whatever age coming in for breaking are first worked on the lunge.  This enables them to learn rythm and balance and for voice training.  Then they wear basic tack including loose side reins.  This is when they learn to accept the reign contact onto the mouth and alter body balance.   At this point the second lunge rein is introduced which travels round behind the horse.

This is the first time they really learn to feel their hind legs, start to engage and for general obedience and balance through changes of direction.  At this point they will have had plenty of leading on the road to get them used to the roads and traffic as this gives them confidence in different surroundings, and also prepares them to be eventually hacked out.

Then they will be taught to be properly long reined both in the school and out on the roads.  Also I can access our fields and they will be long rein cross-country.  All of these procedures test their calmness, their acceptance of all the rules that they have learned, and for their confidence in general.

This next level of their work is ‘backing’.  This is where the horse learns to accept a rider.  Then hopefully, they will be ‘ridden away’ for however long as deemed necessary.  At this point I can teach the horse’s owners on their horse and advise them the best way to carry on their training at home.
